New Delhi:

South Africa took a 1-0 series lead in the three-match Test series against Australia in Perth after they recorded the second highest run chase in Test cricket to beat the World No. 1 by six wickets.

Australia had set a daunting target of 414 runs in the fourth innings for the Proteas, who cruised home with 6 wickets to spare and a session yet left to play.

South African batsmen fired in unison to go home with a win in the pocket. Skipper Graeme Smith and AB De Villers slammed centuries, while Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy made 50s.

It's the second time in the last five years that Australia have been at the receiving end of a record run chase in Test cricket. Last time they faced a similar defeat against West Indies in Antigua in 2003.

South Africa had two years ago recorded the highest run chase in one-day cricket against Australia in Johannesburg.
