South Africa sacks cricket coach

Durban:

South Africa's United Cricket Board today sacked national coach Eric Simons, weeks ahead of the two-Test tour of India beginning November 10. Simons has been replaced by former test cricketer Ray Jennings on a temporary basis.Jennings, currently the coach of South Africa 'A' team, would coach the team for the two-Test tour of India and the Test series against the visiting England and West Indies, UCB CEO Gerald Majola said in a statement today. The UCB earlier declared that it had terminated the contract of Simons following a series of dismal performances by the national team. "The United Cricket Board of South Africa have reached a mutually acceptable agreement with national coach Eric Simons in which his contract will be terminated with immediate effect," the UCB had said. "We are fortunate to have a man of Ray's experience to call on. He was a fine player and has proved with Easterns and in his brief time with the SA 'A' team that he is a top class coach. We look forward to him bringing the same drive and determination to the National Squad," Majola said."The process of finding a full-time replacement will begin in the near future. Thereafter the position will be advertised and all eligible coaches will be free to apply," he added. Majola also disclosed that the contract of manager Tim Southey has also been terminated and Goolam Rajah would replace him for the tour of India after which the position will be reviewed by the CSA.
