Smith slams Ponting's body language

Melbourne:

After inflicting the humiliating defeat in the series opener in Perth, South African captain Graeme Smith has offered some word of advice to his Australian counterpart Ricky Ponting on the etiquette of body language.

Smith rubbed salt to Ponting's wound by claiming that Ponting was under tremendous pressure during the Perth Test which was evidently visible in his negative body language.

Ponting stood with his hands on hips when South African batsmen came hard on Australian bowlers on the final day of the first Test.

"Everyone saw it pretty clearly. Our team certainly commented on it. I think he (Ponting) has been under pressure for a period of time now. It's certainly been nice to fly under the radar in this period of time and we can focus on what we want to do and stay out of the mess," Smith was quoted by the 'Daily Telegraph'.

"I certainly think he (Ponting) would be feeling the pressure, he's a very competitive guy. We knew that if we could get that win in Perth . . . the media seems to put you under pressure and that's the nature of sport these days."

The South African skipper also gave some tips to Ponting on how to deal with pressure situation on the field.

"As a captain, no matter how you are feeling, you need to provide that confidence for your players, even if you don't believe in what's happening or the situation," Smith said.

"They need to know that you have got the self-belief in them on the field. The minute they lose that then they are under more pressure.

"At the end of the day there is enough pressure on every individual out there in the middle, they need to know they have got the full support of not only the captain but everyone," he added.
