Quinton de Kock is adjudged the Man of the Match for his vital knock up front. That's all we have from this game. Do join us for the second ODI in Christchurch on 22nd February at 1100 local (2200 GMT, previous day). Until then, it's goodbye and cheers!
New Zealand will not be too disappointed. They fought hard and pushed South Africa to the limit. Their backs were to the wall after the kind of start the visitors got in the chase but they hung around to make it tough for them. All the Kiwi bowlers excelled in their job. Their spinners were very economical and built the pressure which allowed Kane Williamson to attack with his fast bowlers. In the end, maybe, they didn't have enough runs on the board against a deep batting line-up of South Africa.
The 23rd over bowled by Tim Southee turned the tide completely. He removed JP Duminy and Farhaan Behardien off consecutive deliveries and brought New Zealand on top. Skipper AB de Villiers sensed the occasion and dropped his natural aggressive game. He got an able partner in Andile Phehlukwayo and together the duo stitched a match winning partnership to stretch South Africa's winning streak to 12. Phehlukwayo once again showed his mettle with the bat (played a similar kind of knock against Australia in Durban last October) and his temperament under pressure was excellent.
What a game of cricket! It went right down to the wire and South Africa held their nerves to cross the winning mark. The chase was going great guns for the Proteas as their openers laid a strong platform. Quinton de Kock was in his elements tonight and hammered a valuable knock. However, his wicket, followed by du Plessis' provided an opening for the Kiwis.
Tim Southee to AB de Villiers
FOUR! And AB de Villiers finishes it off in style! Southee angles in a full ball around off, de Villiers clears his front leg and launches it over the bowler's head for a boundary down at long off. SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 4 WICKETS!
Tim Southee to Andile Phehlukwayo
Quicker delivery, full and angling down, Phehlukwayo fails to flick and they steal a leg bye.
Spears in a yorker just outside off, from around the wicket, Andile fails to dig it out.
SIX! Ho! Ho! Ho! What a shot under pressure! Southee lets out a back of a length ball on middle, Phehlukwayo pushes his weight on the back foot and generates tremendous power behind his jab shot. Gets it from the meat of his blade and clears long on for a biggie. 3 needed off 4 balls.
Two wides! Slower bouncer by Southee, de Villiers tries his best to hook but fails to connect. They steal another bye as the keeper misses his shy at the striker's end again. Southee collects the ball and also has a shy at his end but he too misses.
Mid on and mid off drop back.
Excellent delivery by Southee, bowls a slower delivery outside off, Phehlukwayo is deceived, swings his bat blindly and misses. AB de Villiers calls him through for a quick bye as the keeper misses his shy at the striker's end. 11 needed off 5 balls!
Tim Southee will bowl the final over. 12 runs needed off 6 balls. Seems like a nail biting finish.
Trent Boult to AB de Villiers
Keeps it very full and outside off, de Villiers reaches out for it and forces it through covers. They complete the second run and Andile had to dive to get in safely. The throw from the deep towards the bowler's end was also way off target.
Speedy delivery on this occasion, fullish and outside off, de Villiers tries to hammer it through the line but misses. 14 needed off 7!
Trent Boult to Andile Phehlukwayo
A low dipping yorker on off, Andile digs it out to covers and crosses for a brisk single.
SIX! What a reply from Andile! Slower delivery, full and outside off, right in the slot, Phehlukwayo gives it the full whack of his bat and muscles it over long off for a maximum.
Oohhh... Terrific delivery and Boult is really unlucky not to have a wicket. Spears in a full ball on off, it nips away a shade as Phehlukwayo swings his bat and misses. That missed the off stump by a whisker.
Boult steams in from around the wicket and hits the yorker zone outside off, de Villiers only manages to dig it out as far as the cover fielder and takes a single.
22 needed off 12 balls.
Ish Sodhi to Andile Phehlukwayo
Quicker one outside off, Phehlukwayo cuts it straight to the fielder at point.
