Durban:

Former South Africa skipper Kepler Wessels feels South Africa will enjoy an edge over Australia who are struggling to retain their number one Test-side tag, during the upcoming Test and ODI series.

Ricky Ponting's men, who arrived here on Monday, will play a three-match Test series and five one-dayers, besides two Twenty20 matches.

"The Proteas are better than the Aussies in every aspect of the game and have an excellent chance of winning the series," Wessels, who also represented Australia in 24 Test matches, said on Thursday.

The cricketer-turned-commentator also feels the recent success has earned the team a good rhythm and made the players more determined to perform better.

"South Africa appeared to be more determined than ever to conquer the Australians even though the visitors had made some recovery during their tour to New Zealand," Wessels said.

Graeme Smith's team had a memorable tour Down Under, during which they clinched the Test Series 2-1 against the world champions.

Wessels said that though the Australians are trying to find legendary spinner Shane Warne's shadow in the young tweaker Bryce McGain but the South African batsmen would not be intimidated by the rookie.

"South Africans had fared very well against spin stars such as Anil Kumble of India and Danish Kaneria of Pakistan over the past three years. I don't think the Proteas have a problem against leg-spinners," said Wessels.

The Australians play the only practice match against South Africa 'A' in Potchefstroom on Friday, before the start of first Test in Johannesburg on February 26.
