Rethink Champions Trophy: Players body

Durban:

In the backdrop of problems faced by the ICC in organising the biennial Champions Trophy, South African Players' Association Chief (SAPA) Tony Irish said the game's world governing body should rethink over the tournament's future.

"It's a tournament that has experienced problems over the years. Everyone is still striving towards the ICC World Cup and the (recently introduced) Twenty20 World Championships is also important on the cricket calendar," Irish was quoted as saying in Afrikaan's daily The Beeld.

In the last one decade since the event was inaugurated in 1998, there has been some or the other problem associated with hosting of the event, he said.

The security issue in Pakistan resulted in postponement of the event this year while the previous edition hosted by India had received a cold response putting a question mark over its necessity in the international calendar.

Irish hailed the International Cricket council's decision to postpone the event to October 2009 and said "sound judgments" had prevailed.

"There is no way that you can send players to Pakistan amidst reports from security experts indicating that it would be unsafe to do so.

"That's why I believe that South Africa took the right decision. It is also the right decision to postpone the tournament indefinitely."
