Bengal are desperate to carve out a victory against Tamil Nadu in the final round match of Ranji Trophy ODI to remain in the fray for the title hunt.

Kolkata: Bengal, disappointed to have narrowly missed a win against formidable Mumbai, were desperate to carve out a resounding victory against Tamil Nadu in the final round match of Ranji Trophy one-day cricket tournament tomorrow to remain in the fray for the title hunt. The hosts, having culled eight points from last three matches, needed a victory along with a bonus point in the fourth and final match to equal Mumbai, topping the table with 13 points from four outings. "We face a must win situation and also need a bonus point to keep our hopes alive. Our boys will put in their best effort to bag vital points," Bengal coach Karsan Ghavri said. Bengal's chances, however, also depends on the outcome of the Delhi-Rajasthan match tomorrow. In case Rajasthan cause an upset, Mumbai would walk away with the trophy, riding on their victory against Bengal. But if Delhi a€" now equalling Bengal a€" bags five points, all the three teams would be in the contention and the champions would be decided on the basis of net run rates. Nothing to lose Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, had nothing to lose as they were out of the fray with only four points from three matches. The southern state, who tasted their only success against minnows Rajasthan, would vie to salvage some pride winning their last tie at the Jadavpur University ground. However, going by the recent form, Bengal seemed to have some edge over their rivals. The hosts would look for major contributions from opener Abhijit Das, Nikhil Haldipur and skipper Debang Gandhi to get a big score to improve the run rate. (PTI)
