Rahul Dravid, quietly the best

New Delhi:

Rahul Dravid has crossed the milestone of scoring 10,000 runs in Test cricket with an average higher than anyone else in history.

He has surpassed the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

Not flamboyant off the field maybe, but when it comes to pure cricket, no one can dare say Jammy is not flashy. And he can be as elegant as Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara.

Many other facts say that Dravid may actually be the greatest.

Of the three, Dravid was the quickest to get to 9000 Test runs, he did it in only 176 innings, which is a world record.

Dravid is quite easily the true match-winner as well. He averages 73.88 in matches India has won, which is more than 10 runs higher than Tendulkar, while Lara is way behind.

In what many consider is the biggest test, Dravid tops the averages when playing away from home. His average is 58.50, compared with Sachin's 55.5 and Lara's 47.8.

So why isn't Dravid considered to be the best of all times after Bradman? One reason could be a dip in form in 2007. There were recent cracks in the wall. It has taken Dravid 30 innings to make his last 1000 Test runs.

"If I had to tell a child how to play cricket, in terms of how to put your resources together, technique, temperament, working towards a goal, the role model would always be Rahul Dravid for me," says former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja.

Therefore, Dravid might be the best a man can get. Perhaps, the Gillette ad, featuring Dravid along with the likes of Roger Federer and Tiger Woods, says more than most experts will admit.

It says that along side the world's sporting elite, stands not only Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara, but a humble, almost shy man named Rahul Dravid, who many say is quietly the best.
