Karachi:
According to insiders privy to the talks between Younis and Qadir over the selection of players for the match starting on Saturday, the two had disagreements on several players.
"It was not smooth sailing as Younis, on a number of occasions, put his foot down on the selection of some players," one source said.
He said Qadir did not want opener Khurrum Manzoor in the squad and insisted on having Nasir Jamshed but Younis took a stand and eventually the selectors acceded to his demand to have Manzoor in the side.
Similarly the source said Younis was not comfortable having rookie fast bowler Mohammad Talha in the squad but Qadir convinced him to try him out and have a close look at him.
"Younis felt that Talha and opener Ahmed Shahzad were still pretty raw and instead of putting them into the Pakistan squad the selectors should allow them to play some more domestic cricket before bringing them forward," the source said.
The selectors have included five uncapped players in the squad for the first Test, including Talha and Shahzad, Fawad Alam, Khurrum Manzoor and Sohail Khan.
The last three have represented Pakistan in recent One-Day International matches.
The source said Younis had made it clear that he would have the final say in the playing eleven as he was responsible on the field for the team's performance.
"The Pakistan skipper was also not very happy that the selectors didn't want Sohail Tanvir in the squad," the source said.
He said there was plenty of discussion on the possibility of using former captain Shoaib Malik as an opener in the Test although nothing was finalised.
Although Younis, coach Intikhab Alam and the selectors were all here on Wednesday, they preferred to discuss the probables on telephone but didn't bother to hold a proper meeting.
Sources said that Qadir and some other board officials were not happy with the insistence of Younis to have the conditioning camp for the Pakistani probables at Steel Town complex, a remote township on the outskirts of Karachi.
Younis, who twice refused the Pakistan captaincy before and after the last World Cup, agreed last month to replace Malik as captain but has made it clear that he wants the same sort of authority that successful captains like Imran Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq have enjoyed in the past.
