Ponting to NDTV: Ishant is a standout player

Brisbane:

Australian Captain Ricky Ponting has been speaking exclusively to NDTV throughout India's tour of Australia.

The Aussie captain says that controversies did not take a toll on his team. He did admit that he came out looking bad in this series, even though he personally was not involved in anything.

"Some of the controversies have been pretty unavoidable, I have had to stand up in controversies which I have never been in involved like the Harbhajan episode. I know my impression came out badly because of that episode," he said.

In his typical style, Ponting wasn't too gracious about Harbhajan Singh saying the off-spinner had a good tour, but that he would be relieved to get home after all that he has gone through.

"The tour will be remembered for its controversy, the players will remember the series from how big, how tough and how enjoyable the series was to be a part of," said the Australian skipper.

"The Sydney Test was a highlight, pinching a win from what seemed a draw. The Perth Test was a great Test even though we lost and the Adelaide Test ended up having its own highlights," said Ponting.

Ricky Ponting was quite forthcoming in his praise for Indian bowler Ishant Sharma.

"Ishant has been the standout young player in the Indian set up through the tour. Everybody has spoken about him. At different times he has bowled very good spells. The spell he bowled to me in Perth on the last day was some of the better bowling I have faced in Test cricket," he further said.

"He's someone who's going to be around for a while and play a lot of cricket. It's something I have always said about the Indian team; they always seem to produce good young players. Let's see how they develop over the next few years," he added.
