Ponting tells Warner to trust his abilities

Melbourne:

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has advised new batting sensation David Warner to trust his abilities and not get bog down for failing to live up to expectations when he plays before the home crowd on Friday.

Warner struck a blazing 89 off 43 balls on his Twenty20 debut but has been struggling since then.

Australia and South Africa will play the third one-dayer in Sydney tomorrow and the five-match series is locked 1-1. "I guess in a way he probably wishes he didn't make that 80-odd in that first Twenty20 game because it brought a bit of that pressure and spotlight on to him," Ponting said.

"For David now, I guess it's a matter of working out a style that will work for him in the 50-over game and trusting in himself and not worrying about all this speculation about how good he might be or how quickly he's going to score runs," he said.

The captain said pressure is always there when a player plays at the home ground and counselled Warner to keep working on his game.

"Being in front of a home crowd can have a couple of different effects on you. I know when I play down in Tassie I probably try too hard to do well for the home crowd, but we'll see how Dave responds tomorrow.

"He's obviously a highly talented player who needs that little time to find his feet. He has to work out a style of play that will work for him and that will only come from experience," he was quoted as saying by 'Daily Telegraph'.

Ponting cited the example of Shaun Marsh, who coped well with the expectations and said fellow players including him were all willing to guide him.

"If you look at the way (fellow opener) Marsh has put his past few innings together, I think that's a sign he has found a way that's going to make him successful."
