Melbourne:

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting hoped troubled all-rounder Andrew Symonds would get back to playing for the national team soon but admitted it will depend on the player himself.

"Everything he has said is obviously pretty positive about wanting to represent Australia again as much as he can. We're all cricketers, we all want to play as many games for Australia as we possibly can," Ponting said on Wednesday.

"The ball is back in his court now and with a couple of months until we return from South Africa, hopefully everything progresses while we're away," he said.

Symonds' off-field shenanigans have drawn flak from Cricket Australia and the all-rounder was not considered for the tour of South Africa and instead told to undergo rehabilitation for his recent problems.

Ponting said the players accepted CA's decision to drop Symonds' from the tour of South Africa.

"We all hope that things keep progressing for him. As we know, with his counselling it's a work in progress. It's all down to him now, he's got to work out for himself whether it's really what he wants to do.

"He's been saying all the right things and, for the majority, doing all the right things. I certainly wish him all the best - he's been a good friend of mine and a good team-mate of mine over the years," Ponting was quoted as saying by 'The Daily Telegraph'.
