England captain Kevin Pietersen has admitted that he played the opening Test against India here with a fractured rib that he suffered before the last ODI at Cuttack.

The England skipper admitted to sleepless nights before the Chennai Test as he agonised over the debate about whether England should accept security advice that it was safe to return to India, but until yesterday he repeatedly played down the extent of his rib injury.

"I have got a fractured rib," he said. "There are no dramas. I will deal with it. I don't like injections. I will just take painkillers," England skipper Kevin Pietersen told The Guardian

The English captain failed to get any substantial scores in any of the two innings that he played in Chennai but said he was determined to be available for the second Test which begins on December 19.

The second and final Test is schedule to commence on December 19 and dashing right hander has three days to recover.
