London:

Monty Panesar's plans to play club cricket in Sri Lanka to finetune his skills ahead of England's tour to India has hit a roadblock owing to a pay dispute.

The England left-arm spinner was slated to be in Sri Lanka next month to play for Bloomfield in the island nation's domestic tournament but negotiations between the club and England and Wales Cricket Board broke down and it is unlikely that Panesar would make the trip.

Bloomfield president Upali Dharmadasa said the club's cricket committee sought a fee of 7500 pound from the ECB to accommodate Panesar since they would have to drop one Sri Lankan player for a month, but the English board refused to pay the amount.

"We were going to sacrifice one of our players to accommodate Panesar so we told John Carr, the ECB's director of cricket, to compensate us with something so that the club and the player will benefit," Dharmadasa was quoted as saying in 'The Sun'.

"Initially they came to us and said they would pay 500 pound. We said we were not happy with the figure and we put the matter up to the committee which decided that 7500 pound would be a reasonable amount. However, Carr came back to us and said they can pay only 1000 which is not acceptable to us," he said.

Dharmadasa added that to accommodate Panesar, the club would have had to drop experienced left-arm spinner Shanuka Dissanayake, who captained Bloomfield last season, for one month.

With talks between the two parties breaking down, a media conference planned by the ECB at Cinnamon Grand Hotel on November 3 looks unlikely to take place.
