Lucknow/ Karachi:
Pakistan Cricket Board officials in Karachi confirmed that they had received a request from the tour-selection committee in India and they were sending an additional keeper to reinforce their team.
"The national selection committee will now decide who to send by Monday or Tuesday," a PCB spokesman said.
Pakistan team's media-coordinator Javed Akhtar said the team management decided to ask for an additional keeper when they found that Akmal had aggravated his finger injury.
"Akmal played with injury today and it (injury) got worsened, so the team decided to ask for an additional wicket keeper," Akhtar told reporters in Lucknow this evening.
Sources in the PCB said Sarfraz Ahmed, a former Pakistan under-19 captain, is expected to join the squad as he has been relieved from his team (PIA) for the next domestic cricket match, starting on Tuesday.
Akmal is being severely criticised for his ordinary show behind the stumps though he found a supporter in skipper Shoaib Malik, who defended him during the post-match press conference in Kanpur saying, "everyone goes through this phase".
Akmal has not had a very happy time in the first three one-day internationals in the series dropping catches and not cracking with the bat as well, which is considered to be his forte.
The source also said that the Board and selectors were already concerned with Akmal's form and were trying to talk to the team management in India to discuss the issue.
Sarfaraz is considered to be one of the most promising keepers in Pakistan and has done well at the domestic level.
He also led Pakistan to the ICC Youth World Cup victory in Sri Lanka after defeating India in the final in the early 2006.
Apart from Sarfaraz, Test batsman Faisal Iqbal may also fly to India as a back up or replacement for senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who has complained of a knee problem, sources added.
Yousuf had undergone a MRI scan before going to India for the same problem but the results had cleared him of a major problem.
"But the selectors are waiting for a green signal from the tour-selection-committee as it is their prerogative to decide which player should be in the touring squad in India," the source said.
