Auckland:

A steely 88 from Jacob Oram provided the backbone for New Zealand as they posted 234 for nine against a revitalised England bowling attack in the third one-day cricket international on Friday.

New Zealand comfortably won the first two ODIs and were looking to wrap up the five-match series here but ran into an England side not prepared to lie down.

After winning the toss and sending New Zealand in to bat, England had New Zealand at four for 53 after 15 overs and the innings never fully recovered on a wicket that offered plenty.

Openers Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder were unable to recapture the form that saw them carry New Zealand to a 10-wicket win in the second match at Hamilton on Tuesday.

McCullum was back in the pavilion for four in the second over, Jamie How managed to make 10, Ryder 23 and Scott Styris three as James Anderson and Stuart Broad took control with two wickets apiece.

The out-of-sorts Peter Fulton played and missed and occasionally connected to reach four off 25 deliveries before he left a gaping hole between bat and pad and was bowled by Paul Collingwood.

When Ross Taylor became Collingwood's second victim for 31, New Zealand were 95 for six in the 30th over leaving Oram, with help from Vettori, to save a total collapse.

They put on 74 for the seventh wicket before Vettori became Collingwood's third wicket, caught by Owais Shah at 42.

The usually big-hitting Oram continued in tempered fashion for him, reaching 88 off 91 with four fours and four sixes before he launched into a full toss by Ryan Sidebottom only to be caught at mid-wicket by a diving Ian Bell.

Broad with 3-32 and Collingwood with 3-43 were the most successful of the bowlers as England put themselves in a position to keep the series alive.
