New Zealand dropped Tim Southee and drafted in all rounder Ewen Thompson in the 12-man squad announced for the fourth one-dayer against India.

Christchurch:

New Zealand on Monday dropped paceman Tim Southee and drafted in all rounder Ewen Thompson in the 12-man squad announced for the fourth cricket one-dayer against India to be played at the Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Wednesday.

Southee paid the price of becoming New Zealand's most expensive bowler by conceding 0-105 as India raced to 392 for four in the third one-dayer yesterday.

Thomson, who made his international debut in the Twenty20 series against the West Indies in December, replaced injured Ian Butler.

Butler, who has been laid low by a thigh strain, will be available for selection for the fifth ODI to be played in Auckland (March 14).

Chairman of the selection panel,, Glenn Turner, said: "Ian Butler was omitted due to injury, after suffering a thigh strain during last night's ODI at Christchurch. But he is likely to be available for consideration for the final ODI in Auckland on Saturday. The squad for that game would be named after the Hamilton match."

Skipper Daniel Vettori, who missed the match to be with his wife for the birth of their first child, will also rejoin the team in Hamilton.

Peter McGlashan has been retained as wicketkeeper while Brendon McCullum will continue to play as a batsman.

India lead the series 2-0, with one match being washed out at Wellington.

The squad: Daniel Vettori (Captain), Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Ewen Thompson.
