KANDY, Sri Lanka:

Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralidharan claimed his 708th Test wicket in the first Test against England on Sunday to equal retired Australian Shane Warne's world record tally.

The 35-year-old had debutant Ravi Bopara caught behind by wicket keeper Prasanna Jayawardene to draw level with fellow-spinner Warne, and needs one more wicket to take over as Test cricket's most successful bowler.

Muralidharan has taken four wickets in England's first innings total of 182-5 in reply to Sri Lanka's modest 188.

The off-spinner reached 708 wickets in his 116th Test while Warne played in 145 matches before retiring in January this year.
