Former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga has advised star off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan not to go on the upcoming tour of Australia.

New Delhi:

With the racism row surrounding Andrew Symonds yet to die down, former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga has reignited the debate by advising star off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan not to go on the upcoming tour of Australia.

Muralitharan is just nine wickets away from breaking Shane Warne's world record of 708 Test wickets.

The 35-year-old has hardly distinguished himself when playing against Australia at their backyard, having taken just three wickets at an average of 116.

He hasn't been helped by the crowd abuse, being pelted with banana skins during a game in Brisbane on an earlier tour and as well as being taunted over his bowling action.

Ranatunga added that while he would advise Murali not to tour, the decision to tour or not to tour rests entirely with the off-spinner.
