Malik, Yousuf row due to lack of communication: Alam

Karachi:

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam feels that lack of communication was the reason behind the row between skipper Shoaib Malik and senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf.

"I don't think this row between Malik and Yousuf would have taken place if there had been a culture of more communication between players in the team," Alam said. Yousuf, who defected to the Indian Cricket League, had blamed Malik for not giving him due respect, which, he said, had forced him to join the rebel league.

Malik denied Yousuf's claims and said he was ready to meet the senior batsman to clear any misunderstanding. Alam, who became the Pakistan team coach in October, said his first job was to improve the communication level between players.

"I am trying to make sure they are no communication gaps in the team because it gives rise to such problems that need to be avoided in future as it does not reflect well on Pakistan cricket," Alam said.

"Already we have got success and the atmosphere is getting better. The players have responded well," said Alam who guided Pakistan to a 3-0 win over the West Indies in the ODI series in Abu Dhabi last month.

The former skipper said he was himself trying to spend as much time as possible with the players and hear out their points of view.

Alam's strategy appears to be bearing fruit after fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar recently praised Malik for showing more respect towards senior players in Abu Dhabi.
