Lahore:

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik dismissed reports that he had married an Indian woman.

It had been claimed that the 26-year-old had married Ayesha Siddiqui five years ago.

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik was on the defensive on Tuesday. At a specially organised press conference in Lahore on Tuesday, he denied claims by an Indian family that he married their daughter five years ago.

Mohammad Ahmed Siddiqui has stated that his daughter Ayesha married Malik on June 3rd 2002.

But the 26-year old batsman denies that such a union ever took place.

"Whatever is coming in the media these days, and what I know, it is absolutely false and it has affected my honour," Malik said.

"I will definitely say that what Ayesha Khan is saying, that we were married... nothing of this sort happened and I also think that they have damaged my name."

"For what they are saying in the media, I will sue them through the law."

Malik's brother in law Imran explained that Shoaib had been trying to reach an agreement to arrange a marriage with the family in Hyderabad. But that the woman sent someone else's photograph to the Pakistan cricketer:

"We did not say anything like this by telephone," said Imran.

"Marriage vows cannot be exchanged by telephone and it has not happened. There was a commitment but if you look at this a bit you will get an idea that his (Shoaib's) commitment was with the girl whose picture he had."

Arranged marriages are common in Pakistan, and couples often agree to wed without having ever met in person.
