A thoroughly clinical performance from Zimbabwe and they have taken the Sri Lankans by surprise. It shows that they have a lot of potential and can't be taken lightly. The home side have a lot to ponder upon and need to improve drastically in the next game. The 2nd ODI will take place at the same venue on 2nd July. Do join us for that. Till then, goodbye and cheers!
Zimbabwe skipper, Graeme Cremer says it is a very special moment. Appreciates the batters. Feels Mire has found form in the last two games and can be effective with both bat and ball. Mentions they are taking it one game at a time and will head into the next game with confidence.
Sri Lanka skipper, Angelo Mathews says that they had enough on the board but they were poor on the field and the catching was bad. Mentions that it was a really good batting effort from Zimbabwe. Adds that they kept sweeping and reverse sweeping which put the spinners under pressure. Ends by saying that they had good spinners and seamers but they were not good enough on the day.
Man of the match, Solomon Mire calls it is a very special day. He is thankful to the help he got from the coaches. Admits he was a bit scratchy in the beginning. Mentions he started trusting his instincts and everything went on well.
The 161-run stand between the duo landed the visitors in a commanding position. Mire was lucky on occasions but he was still outstanding to score his maiden ton. Gunaratne was introduced into the attack and took two quick wickets but the damage was already done by then. The hosts couldn't trigger any collapse. Raza and Waller entertained the crowd with some exquisite strokes and took the tourists over the finishing line with some authority. At the halfway stage, it didn't look like they would chase this stiff target. Kudos to them for displaying tremendous composure. Off colour bowling and shoddy fielding from the opposition helped their cause but nothing can be taken away from Zimbabwe.
What an amazing victory for Zimbabwe! They had never registered a victory on Sri Lankan soil but the way they have chased this steep target down deserves a lot of appreciation. This is the highest chase in an ODI in Sri Lanka as well. The visitors showed intent from the start of the run chase and kept the scoreboard ticking. Masakadza and Ervine lost their wickets early but that didn't deter the others. The spinners, Dananjaya and Aponso bowled tight lines in the beginning but Mire and Williams were equal to the task. They didn't let them settle down and scored briskly.
