Bangladesh beat South Africa by 21 runs
Finally a contest in this World Cup! After plenty of one-sided affairs, we witnessed equal fight from two teams and Bangladesh managed to outplay South Africa in the end mainly due to their power-hitting at the death. Trent Bridge is the next stop now. On Monday, England will be facing Pakistan at 1030 local (0930 GMT). Do join us for all the action. Cheers!
Bangladesh skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza, feels that the first match sets the tone and it was nice to win. He says they were always positive, carrying on from the tour of Ireland. Admits now that it was nice to bat first and also tells that he was slightly confused what to do if they win the toss but there was a belief that batting could be good as this was the second game on this pitch after England versus South Africa in the tournament opener. The skipper states that the batters batted really well, especially Soumya Sarkar. He also mentions that the surface was good to bat on and one had to bowl in the right areas. Adds that the spinners bowled well also and the pacers finished off the job in the end. Mashrafe thanks the crowd that was behind them and hopes they are back for the next game as well. Wants the team to perform the same way in all the upcoming games as even the fans at home watching on TV will be rooting for the side to win.
South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis, says that things in this World Cup have not quite gone according to the plan with players getting injured. Admits that 330 was a bit too much and says that it was not an ideal performance. On the pitch, Faf says that the local staff told him there would be more on the surface than what they got. Adds that they have to take the damage inflicted by Bangladesh in the last 5 overs with the bat on the chin. Observes that at the end of the 45th over, both teams were at the same score, so that shows the extent of the damage. On Lungi Ngidi's injury, du Plessis is tight-lipped as he is not sure and hopes that Dale Steyn recovers soon. On the upcoming match against India, Faf replies that things are not getting easier and they would have to be on their toes and be at their best.
Shakib Al Hasan is the Man of the Match! He rates this win as one of the top wins in his side's World Cup history. He mentions that this is his fourth World Cup and they have done some upsets previosuly but this is the World Cup that they want to prove something. He states that before they arrived in England, they believed that they can play well and this is the start that they wanted and they were lucky to get it. He reckons now they have to build on this. Shakib admits that having played 2 years with Worcestershire, he knew the conditions well and it also helped playing in the Champions Trophy 2017 here! He tells us that he did not know it was a record partnership with Mushfiqur but says it was a good stand and came at an important time for the team. About the next game, the star all-rounder feels that it will be a big game against New Zealand, and that the confidence will be up but the Black Caps are a really good team and it will be important to come back and do the job properly again.
In today's time, a total in excess of 300 has become a norm and teams have chased it down quite often. South Africa started their chase decently with a 49-run opening stand, followed by yet another handy partnership and looked to be on track. Their batsmen kept on getting starts but none managed to play a big knock which was the need of the hour. The top 6 never looked troubled in their stay in the middle and credit should be given to Bangladesh for striking at regular intervals whenever a partnership started to blossom. Mortaza didn't have a good day with the ball but he was very inspirational in marshaling his troops. Mustafizur and Saifuddin provided timely breakthroughs and were the pick of the bowlers. Their fielding was also top notch, catching most of the chances coming their ways and overall it's a dream start to their World Cup campaign.
It was a strong batting show by Bangladesh first up to post a big total on the board. Shakib and Rahim played crucial parts with their record century stand and then the late flourish from Mahmudullah powered them to a total which proved to be 21 too much for South Africa.
Bangladesh have thumped South Africa in their tournament opener. What an outstanding result for the Bangla Tigers! Shouldn't be counted as an upset to be fair. A clinical performance. Kudos to them. Kudos to Mashrafe Mortaza, the skipper. Some smart captaincy, some smart bowling changes and the result is there to cherish.

IT'S HIGH! Duminy survives. Great review for South Africa. Mustafizur gets a good length ball to angle into the left-hander from over the wicket. Duminy sticks back to work it on the leg side but fails to close the face of his bat in time. He mises the ball completely to get rapped on the pads and the finger goes up after the appeal is made. JP consults his partner before taking the referral and the Ball Tracker finds the ball to be heading over the stumps.
OUT! The Fizz strikes again. JP Duminy has been given out lbw. He has a chat with his partner and then takes the DRS. Is height a factor here?

Nearly a run out there! Ooohhh...nerves here shown by the South African batsmen. Rassie taps a length ball in front of square on the off side and comes out of the crease in search of a run. Seeing Mehedi make a diving stop, Duminy sends his partner back and van der Dussen reaches safely as the fielder misses his shy at the striker's end.

OUT! Gone! Massive, massive breakthrough for Bangladesh and the crowd is going mad! Mustafizur this time angles in a length ball around off and Miller stretches forward to flick it on the leg side. But he closes the face of his bat early and the leading edge flies straight into the hands of Mehedi at point. He makes no mistake and this match continues to keep everyone on the edge. 129 needed off 89 balls.

Starts off with a flatter ball on the pads, it is worked to mid-wicket.
Mossadek Hossain comes on to bowl now after the break.
Drinks break! This has been a solid start to the chase from South Africa even though they have lost Quinton de Kock. They are slightly behind the pace at the moment but with the power-hitters they have in their camp, they need to just concentrate on keeping wickets and getting closer. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will look to pick a couple of wickets quickly here which would really put them on top in this game! An exciting phase coming up now.

Mehedi Hasan To Quinton de Kock OUT!
OUT! Run out! That too after a dropped catch! Rahim would be a really happy person here. A flatter ball outside off, de Kock looks to cut this away but gets a feather behind which Rahim cannot hold on to. The ball goes fine on the leg side and de Kock is watching his partner who initially calls him for a run. But seeing the keeper reach the ball quickly, Markram sends de Kock back. By that time though, Quinton is too far down the ground and has no chance of making it back. Rahim calmly scores a direct hit at the striker's end and that means the southpaw has to head back to the pavilion. Lots of confusion and this is what it leads to, the loss of the first wicket!

Mustafizur Rahman To Quinton de Kock
This one is on the pads again, de Kock looks to flick but misses. The ball rolls back down the ground to the bowler. A decent first over from the Fizz!

Mustafizur Rahman To Quinton de Kock
FOUR! Off the mark in style is de Kock. A bit of width outside off, Quinton crunches this drive away through point. Easy pickings for a batsman of his caliber.

Pushed off the front foot towards mid on this time by the southpaw.

Mustafizur Rahman To Quinton de Kock
Bowled on the pads this time, de Kock looks to flick this away but misses and gets hit on the thigh pad. The ball was striking down leg though and hence there is no appeal.

Much better from QdK. A fuller length ball on middle, punched back towards the bowler.

Mustafizur Rahman To Quinton de Kock
Oooh! That ball could have gone anywhere. On a length outside off, de Kock looks to keep it out from the crease. The ball goes off the inside half and bounces next to the stumps. Quinton had to be careful where it was heading.
We are back for the chase! Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram are seen walking down the stairs and onto the field as the South African openers. They are followed by the Bangladesh team who head out to their positions. All in readiness, the brand new white ball is in the hands of Mustafizur Rahman. De Kock to face, with a slip in place. Let's play!
