Laxman - the thorn in Australia's flesh

New Delhi:

What makes VVS Laxman "very very special"? The answer is simple: he is the only Indian cricketer of our era who consistently sends a shiver through the spines of Australian bowlers.

Needless to say, it didn't come off as a surprise to anyone when the stylish batsman became the first ever Indian batsman to score two Test double hundreds against the Australians.

"The Australian cricketers told me I am a thorn in their flesh," he told NDTV.

Laxman has scored six of his 13 hundreds against Australia, including two double-centuries, and is only the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to have made more than 2,000 runs against them.

He looks at his fluent best when playing against Australia and has been involved in four massive partnerships against the Kangaroos.

The classy middle-order batsman, however, is not happy with the way the team's senior players were treated in the recent past. He feels that despite their enormous contribution to Indian cricket, the seniors have not got the appreciation and respect they deserve.

"Don't over-respect senior cricketers but appreciate their contribution to Indian cricket," he said.

The batsman who scored 215 runs in three Tests during the Sri Lanka series, said the players were hurt by the post-tour comments. "We were hurt by some of the things that were said after the Sri Lanka tour."

Laxman put on 376 with Rahul Dravid in 2001 (Kolkata), 353 with Tendulkar in 2004 (Sydney), 303 with Dravid in 2003 (Adelaide) and 278 with Gautam Gambhir in the third Test against Australia in Delhi last month.
