Lara to lead WI in Champions Trophy

Despite a poor showing in England, Brian Lara will lead the West Indies in the Champions Trophy tournament in England next month.

Despite a poor showing in England, Brian Lara will lead the West Indies in the Champions Trophy tournament in England next month. The West Indies Cricket Board on Wednesday decided to endorse Lara's captaincy despite calls for his removal by several players after the team went 2-0 down to England in the four-Test series. The third Test starts on Friday. Sarwan to back Lara Long-time vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan will back Lara. They are two of the seven survivors from the 2002 Trophy team, which failed to advance from pool play. The others to be included in the team were Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Wavell Hinds, Mervyn Dillon and Corey Collymore. However veteran wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs was dropped for Courtney Browne of Barbados, while Tino Best and Ravi Rampaul were not considered because of injuries. The West Indies is in Pool B with South Africa and Bangladesh for the tournament, which begins on September 10.
