Galle: The first Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka has ended in a draw.Captain Graeme Smith-led South Africa's fight for survival on the final day of the Test in Galle with a fighting knock of 74. He was helped by Jacques Kallis, who was not out on 52, and Jacques Rudolph not out on 27.Slow progressThe South Africans began the fifth and final day needing 318 runs to win.In the morning session, only 49 runs were chiselled out in 30 overs as the Proteas had clearly ruled out a win and were more focused on survival. Sri Lanka picked up just one wicket during the morning session as Boeta Dippenaar became victim number 532 for Muttiah Muralitharan.After lunch, Sri Lanka, who needed to snatch every opportunity offered, were left cursing after Thilan Samaraweera shelled a sharp chance to his left at slip off Van Jaarsveld on 18. Eventually, though, Sri Lanka broke through as Van Jaarsvel was adjudged LBW off Tillakaratne Dilshan for 29.Smith eventually fell after a captain's knock of 74. But a 68-run partnership between Kalis and Rudolph saw the Proteas through safely to end of day's play at 203 for 3.The second Test begins on August 11 in Colombo.
