Lanka hand big defeat to Bangladesh

New Delhi:

Sri Lanka clinically destroyed Bangladesh in a second stage Asia Cup game at Karachi's National Stadium.

Birthday boy Sanath Jayasuriya smashed a 55-ball hundred, Kumar Sangakkara ran up his third century in four games in the tournament, while Muttiah Muralitharan's fiver capped a comprehensive win for the three-time champions.

Powered by a huge opening partnership worth 201 runs between Jayasuriya and Sangakkara, Sri Lanka made 332-8, their third 300-plus score in the tournament. Bangladesh replied with 174, losing the game by 158 runs.

Jayasuriya, who turned 39 today, made his 130 runs from just 88 balls, with 16 fours and six sixes. His 26th ODI hundred is the sixth fastest in ODIs.

Sangakkara, who had scores of 101, 0 and 112 before this game, scored 121 in 128 balls - his tenth ODI hundred. Their two batsmen added 201 in just 27.5 overs.

That effort notwithstanding, there was a middle order collapse in the Lankan innings. They lost five cheap wickets to slump to 267-5, but by that time, the openers had already set the stage for a big score.

Bangladesh were hardly in the hunt, except for a brief period when Nazimuddin (47 from 59) and Raqibul Hasan 52 (63) struck the ball gleefully in a quick 43 run stand. Once they were out of the way, Muralitharan ran through the middle order taking his tenth ODI fiver.

Muralitharan is now 30 wickets away from equalling Wasim Akram's world record of 502 ODI wickets.

Sri Lanka are undefeated in the Asia Cup, with scores of 357-9 against Bangladesh, 290-9 against the UAE and 302-7 against Pakistan.
