Kirmani lashes out at selectors for axing Ganguly from CT

Kolkata:

Former chairman of cricket selection committee Syed Kirmani lashed out at his present colleagues for excluding former skipper Sourav Ganguly from the 30-member probables list for the Champions Trophy.

The 58-year-old former wicketkeeper felt that Ganguly should not have been given such treatment by Dilip Vengsarkar and Company.

"Ganguly should have figured in the probables. He is a very good batsman. Although he has crossed 36, he has enough left in him to contribute to Indian cricket," Kirmani, who has captained India in one ODI, said.

Commenting on the Test side touring Sri Lanka, wicketkeeper of the 1983 World Cup winning side said, "The side has a blend of youth and experience. It's a balanced side. With the conditions similar to that of India, we can hope to do well in the three-match series."

Urging the ICC and the BCCI to have a proper future tours programme (FTP), Kirmani said, "It's too much of cricket nowadays. It's high time that the supreme authority (ICC) make a proper FTP so that players are not stressed -- as was the case with ODI skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"Players, like Dhoni, stand a chance of burnout by playing excess cricket, and the BCCI should do something about it."

Overwhelmed at the dinner partty organised at the Lord's to felicitate the 1983 World Cup winning squad, Kirmani said, "I felt nostalgic to have seen the same ground, the same pavilion, the same stand... It was quite an emotional affair."

Kirmani, who was awarded the best wicketkeeper in the 1983 Prudential World Cup, hoped Dhoni's men to win another World Cup.

"We have enough talents to become world champions. It's about nourishing the talent to produce a champions side."
