Durban:

South Africa's selectors have included all-rounder Albie Morkel in the national squad for the remaining two Tests against Australia following injury to pace bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Tsotsobe has a cartilage tear in his right knee which needs surgery and he could be out for upto three months, forcing the selectors to pick Albie in the squad. The decision was taken after South Africa lost the first Test to Australia by 163 runs in Johannesburg on Monday.

The second Test starts at Sahara Stadium, Kingsmead, on Friday and the third Test will be played at Sahara Park, Newlands, two weeks later.

"Our medical team has established that Lonwabo Tsotsobe has suffered a torn cartilage injury to his right knee," South Africa's selection committee convener Mike Procter said.

"The medical committee feels that he should have surgery as soon as possible and this will take place towards the end of this week. We certainly could not risk him in a Test match.

"Monde Zondeki, who was in our Test squad in Australia, has also undergone surgery and both players will need about three months off to complete the rehabilitation process.

"Albie showed good form for the Titans at the weekend and is an experienced international cricketer," said the former ICC match referee.

"He gives us an extra seam bowling option if we want to follow that route," said Procter.

The selectors decided to retain faith in the rest of the squad for the remaining two Tests, meaning there was still no place for Ashwell Prince in the side.

The squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, A B de Villiers, J P Duminy, Paul Harris, Jacques Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn.
