Australia have defeated India by 217 runs in the first Test in Bangalore today. Despite some defiant batting by tail-enders Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan, the Aussies proved too good for the Indians and bundled them for 239. Jason Gillespie drew the curtains on Indian innings when he had Harbhajan caught by Glenn McGrath for 42. Zaheer Khan was unbeaten on 22. Earlier, Pathan cracked his maiden Test half-century as he and Harbhajan put up a show of defiant batting to keep Australians at bay in the first session. Belligerent batting The two shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 89 runs and frustrated the Aussie bowlers by smashing the ball all around the ground. The two were particularly harsh on spinner Shane Warne. The duo managed to delay the inevitable by batting with a determination not shown by their famed top order batsmen. But Pathan was finally caught behind by Adam Gilchrist off the bowling of Jason Gillespie for 55. Resuming at 105 for six, India lost their vice-captain Rahul Dravid after a watchful 60 and the end seemed near when Anil Kumble dragged one on to his stumps. Both fell victim to fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz. The Indians were thoroughly outplayed in all the departments of the game from the very first day and overhauling a record target of 457 on a wearing track was well beyond the reach of a batting line up miserably out of form. Debutante Michael Clarke, who hit a century in the first innings, was accorded the Man of the Match award. (With PTI inputs)
