Hayden praises Lara's 'incredible achievement'

Sydney: Australian batsman Matthew Hayden hailed West Indies captain Brian Lara today for his "incredible achievement" of scoring a record 400 runs in a Test match against England. In a 13-hour batting marathon, Lara broke Hayden's world-record individual Test score of 380 and went on to notch up a quadruple tonne before the West Indies declared yesterday. "To bat for that period of time is an incredible achievement," Hayden said on Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio. "I think his status within the game has been recognised for a long period of time now," he said. "He's been an incredibly successful player over almost a decade." Lara became the first man to score 400 in a Test innings as the home side took a big lead on the third day of the fourth and final match against England in Antigua. England were 5-171 at the close of play, 381 runs short of the follow-on target. Lara had held the record for an individual Test score with 375 runs - reached against England on the same Antigua ground 10 years ago - until Hayden broke that with a score of 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth last October.
