London:

Pace bowler Steve Harmison will join the England squad in Sri Lanka on Tuesday after he proved his fitness by playing in two matches in South Africa.

Harmison has not played for England since the fourth Test against West Indies in June. He sat out the subsequent series loss to India because of a back injury.

He has also been out of form, slipping from a position as the top-ranked pace bowler in 2004 to a nadir against Australia last year, when his struggles with line and length were summed up when he bowled the first ball of the first Ashes Test wide to second slip.

Harmison took nine wickets for 169 in one match for South African side Highveld Lions and 4-93 in another, but still conceded several no balls and wides.

Harmison could arrive in time to play in England's first warmup match against a Sri Lanka Cricket Board President's XI, which starts on Tuesday.

The first Test begins Dec 1, with England seeking to build on its success in the recent one-day series.
