London: Allrounder Andrew Flintoff and opening batsman Marcus Trescothick were omitted from the England one-day cricket team to tour Zimbabwe in November. The two stars were given an extra two months off before joining the team in South Africa. Also missing from the Zimbabwe tour will be fast bowler Stephen Harmison, who withdrew on September 19 for moral reasons. The England Cricket Board named 14 players to tour Zimbabwe, including uncapped players Ian Bell, Matthew Prior and Simon Jones. Kevin Pietersen, who was born in South Africa but becomes eligible for England in October, was also chosen. And 33-year-old veteran fast bowler Darren Gough was recalled. Bowler Ashley Giles was given the option of joining Flintoff and Trescothick on the sidelines, but decided to go on the tour. "It's not difficult, it's a question of logistics," chairman of selectors David Graveney said. "We've had an extraordinary summer, a lot of highs, a few lows. It's difficult to intrude on a captain and a coach. We had to work in a very short period of time." As for Gough, Graveney said, "He seems to be written off by most people. He's the first person to put his hand up. He brings so much experience. He still has a huge role to play." The decision to leave Trescothick and Flintoff behind came after a split between the ECB and coach Duncan Fletcher, who wanted some of his players to have some time off. England's busy schedule this year featured beating the West Indies in home and away series and competing in the Champions Trophy one-day international tournament.
