London: England beat West Indies by 210 runs to win the first cricket Test at Lord's here today. Victory on the final day gave England a 1-0 lead in the four Test series. Left-arm spinner Ashley Giles took five for 81 (and match figures of nine for 210) as West Indies, chasing 478 to win, were bowled out for 267. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 128 not out in the first innings, was 97 not out. West Indies started today on 114 for three, needing a further 364 runs to reach a world Test record fourth innings winning total. It was 60 more than the current record of 418 for seven West Indies set when beating Australia by three wickets in May last year at Antigua. But hopes of surpassing that achievement faded when they lost three quick wickets before lunch. That spell saw Giles take his 100th Test wicket when he bowled West Indies captain Brian Lara for 44. After lunch Pedro Collins (two) hung around gamely for nearly an hour before becoming Giles's fifth dismissal of the innings when he was stumped by wicket-keeper Geraint Jones. With Chanderpaul in sight of his second hundred, last man Fidel Edwards was caught behind off Andrew Flintoff to give England victory. Earlier England captain Michael Vaughan made hundreds in both innings.(PTI)
