Birmingham:
Hosts England were restricted to 198 for five from 38 overs in their opening ICC Champions Trophy match against Zimbabwe in Pool D at Edgbaston in Birmingham yesterday. But the match was halted after rain forced the suspension of play. With provision for reserve days, there was no reduction in the number of overs for each side and play will continue today. Paul Collingwood on 35 and Geraint Jones on 23 were at the crease when covers came on. The match began three and a half hours behind the scheduled time due to morning. Vaughan struggles Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu had won the toss and elected to field. Opener Marcus Trescothick edged a good delivery from Douglas Hondo to Brendan Taylor at first slip to be out cheaply for 10. England skipper Michael Vaughan then came to the crease and hit Hondo for two big sixes over midwicket. But Vaughan, who has been struggling of late, became Edward Rainsford's first victim of the day, caught sharply by Mark Vermeulen in the slips with the score at 54 for two. Middlesex captain Andrew Strauss looked in good form before getting out for 25 from 30 balls. Solanki shines Meanwhile at the other end, Vikram Solanki was quietly constructing a solid innings and the Worcestershire batsman reached his third one-day half-century with a classic cut off Rainsford. However, he too couldn't go on to post a major score and was given out leg before by umpire Steve Bucknor off an in-swinging delivery from Vusi Sibanda. Solanki was out for 62 and England were seriously wobbling at 159 for five. However, a 39-run partnership from Paul Collingwood and Geraint Jones saw England to 198 for five from 38 overs before the rain returned and play was called off for the day.
