"We cannot judge his (Dhoni) captaincy on the basis of recent matches against Australia and England. It is too early to judge him," Dev said on the sidelines of a press conference.
"Dhoni needs to show his talent and skill during tough times, which is more important," he added.
The 1983 World Cup winning captain said the Indian team was performing well and the players were looking in good shape.
"The boys are getting better and better with every game. Yuvraj (Singh) is playing well and he should be given a chance to prove his skills," he said.
Kapil also had special mention for Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir and said the starts being given by the duo had played a crucial role in the team's fortune during the series against Australia.
The former all-rounder said he was happy that the ICL players had started getting recognition.
"The players have performed well and I am happy that their performance is being recognised. With more and more people recoginsing them, the players are encouraged to perform better," he said.
