Manchester:

Struck by a stomach bug, England captain Paul Collingwood is a doubtful starter for the fourth one-dayer against India at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Collingwood reportedly suffered stomach cramps on Tuesday night that prompted the team management to spare him from the training session on Wednesday as a precaution.

However, the hosts, who lead the seven-match series 2-1, are hopeful that Collingwood would recover in time to play the day-night game.

In case he does not recover, the onus of leading the side might go to Andrew Flintoff - provided he clears a fitness test - or Kevin Pietersen.

Flintoff has been asked to go for a fitness test after he missed the third one dayer with a knee injury he had sustained crashing into the billboards in the second game in Bristol.

Another key player who faces a fitness test is all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas who was a last minute casualty in the previous game, suffering a hand injury during practice session on the morning of the match.

There is also a possibility of Flintoff leading the side since Pietersen declined the job that was initially offered to him after Michael Vaughan quit one-day cricket.

Pietersen himself is strongly backing Flintoff to return to the side and add to the team's strength on his home ground.

"This is the best I've seen him in a dressing room, to be honest," said Pietersen in praise of the star all-rounder.

"He's very vibrant, very happy, always smiling and just loving being back in the fold again. I think he'll definitely be back playing on Thursday for his home game in Manchester. I'm sure he'll be fighting fit for that."
