New Delhi:
It was on his arrival at Bhubaneswar Airport that Chappell was infamously attacked by a fan. It was then perceived as a protest against lack of Orissa players in the national team but Chappell now says it was a racially motivated attack.
In an interview to the 'Australian' newspaper, Chappell advanced his racism claims by saying that the Indian cricket board played down the incident only because of his nationality and had it been an Indian player at the receiving end there would have been a public outcry.
"I don't really buy the fact that he was talking about the lack of Orissa players in the Indian team. If that was the case why didn't he accost the Chairman of selectors or someone else who might have been involved in the selection process," said the former Indian coach.
"Why would he attack one of the foreigners in the group - me as coach? There's a bit more to it than that."
