Can Sachin's pep talk lift New India?

Melbourne:

If he ever takes up cricket, Arjun Tendulkar can always look back at the luxury of having taken batting tips from his famous father.

But the young boy is not the only beneficiary of the master blaster's advice.

Gautam Gambhir took tips from Tendulkar during the second ODI in Brisbane on his way to a brilliant 102 not out

Lalchand Rajput, assistant coach of the team, says Tendulkar's experience is vital for the team and he is sharing it with the youngsters.

"The youngsters have not had much practice on Australian wickets," Rajput says. "So we always talk to them. Tendulkar gives his valuable tips whenever required, so that is very important from the team's point of view."

However, right now it will need more than Tendulkar's 19 years of top-level experience to stabilize the young Indian batting lineup, especially given the way they collapsed to a nine-wicket loss to Australia in the Twenty20 international last Friday.

They weren't any better in the first one-dayer against Brisbane, leading to many questions over the selection committee's decision to prefer youth to experience.

Chetan Chauhan, the team manager, believes the youngsters have been picked because they are good.

"This is a great opportunity for the youngsters and they have been selected because they are good," Chauhan says.

"In international cricket opportunities are very few and this is a great challenge for these boys."

"They have done well in the second game. And with a bit of exposure and experience of playing in these conditions they will do better," he says.

But for now, Tendulkar will continue to play the senior statesman, frequently spending time in the nets to advise his younger teammates like Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina to ensure that the nucleus of India's batting gains from his experience.
