Karachi:

The family of Pakistan's jailed former Test captain, Salman Butt, has contacted top government officials to help him get deported from the United Kingdom.

Butt and teammates, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir were given various jail sentences by a Crown Court in London last month  while players' agent Mazhar Majeed got a term for  spot-fixing, corruption and cheating during the Lords Test between Pakistan and England in August last year.

Sources close to Butt's family said his father, Zulfiqar Butt had contacted interior minister, Rehman Malik and other top government functionaries to help the players out. "Zulfiqar made a trip to Islamabad this week to meet with top government officials. Basically he has been told by his son's legal team that because of the ties between Pakistan and the United Kingdom the government can help get the players deported from the UK and have them serve the rest of their jail terms in Pakistani jails," one source disclosed.

Rehman Malik, soon after the court announced its verdict, had told reporters that President Asif Zardari, who was chief patron of the cricket board, had told him to use all possible legal means to help out the players.

"The government has even told their high commissioner in the UK, Wajid Shamshul Hasan to hold talks with British authorities and see what can be done to rescue the players," the source said.

Another source said that Zulfiqar Butt was desperate to at least get back his son to Pakistan as Salman and Asif were lodged together at a jail for foreigners in Canterbury and were not comfortable with their security and safety.

Salman Butt's lawyer, Yasin Patel has already filed an appeal against his conviction.
