The offspinner says the Indian batting did not click again but is hoping for big hundreds from Dravid and Laxman on Day 4.

Colombo:

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh admitted that Indians once again failed to click as a batting unit as the team was staring at defeat in the series-deciding third and final cricket Test here on Sunday.

"Obviously, it is a little disappointment that as a batting unit we did not perform what we should actually have. These are the guys who have won games for India. It is just a matter of not clicking perhaps," he said after India was trying to save the match at 161 for 5 in their second innings at the end of the third day.

Harbhajan said India needed a good start but added there was no point brooding over what could not be helped now.

"It would, obviously, have been good if the openers had contributed. It is good to get a strong start. But now that it has not happened we cannot do anything about it. We have to play well tomorrow and make sure we get maximum runs and they try to make a game out of it."

India have managed just 14-run lead with half of their batting line up back in the pavilion with two days still remaining in the match.

Harbhajan, however, tried to put a brave face by saying India could still win the match if Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman play a steady game on Monday.

"We are not out (of the match). There is still a big hope on Laxman and Rahul. They are very capable of getting 100s. Keeping my fingers crossed. Both of them get a brilliant hundred tomorrow and we have some sort of target to defend them. Let us see," he said.

"Whatever we get more than 150 runs (lead), we will try and make the game out of it. But we have to bat really well tomorrow to get those runs. Since Laxman and Rahul are still there, there is big hope," he added.

Harbhajan said the wicket was still good for batting.

"The pitch is a very good wicket to bat on. I think if you have patience you can score lot of runs. Obviously, it is not doing much for the bowlers, for the spinners or seamers. It is not spinning big or bouncing much. It is a good wicket to bat on and I hope we bat well tomorrow."

Asked if there would be not much difference to the wicket in the next two days, Harbhajan quipped "I hope there are two days".

He said the wicket had not changed much in the first three days.

"It is pretty much the same. It is quite a hard surface. May be on the fifth day it will play differently. You have to bat well to go to the fifth day. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Hoping to get some sort of runs on board to bowl at Sri Lankans in the second innings. Try to make a match out of it."
