New Delhi:And that's not all in Karachi's hall of shame. In 1969, the Pakistan-England test match was abandoned because of riots. However, the game has been entered in the record books as a drawn game. In 1975, a test between Pakistan and West Indies had three hours lost on the second day of the test after a Wasim Raja hundred caused crowd invasions. West Indies eventually had only 25 minutes to chase 170 for a win. In 1983, an India-Pakistan test match had play disrupted on the fourth day after attempts to damage the pitch were made. Making matters worse To make matters worse for the city was the infamous one-dayer between India and Pakistan in 1989. The match was abandoned midway due to rioting with Pakistan at 28 for 3 in the 15th over. Karachi might well argue that Kolkata's Eden Gardens also has a poor track record. A world cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka was abandoned in 1996. In 1999, an India-Pakistan test had to be completed after the crowds were evacuated. However, Karachi's fate will now be decided at Kolkata when the BCCI meets for its final decision on the tour itinerary.
The government is expected to take a decision today on the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) team's security report for the Indian cricket team's tour of Pakistan next month. The BCCI report has suggested minimising exposure in two venues in Karachi and Peshawar and scrapping the third one in Rawalpindi. The three member BCCI team that inspected security arrangements in Pakistan last week will submit its report to the Home Ministry today. This will then be followed by a meeting of the BCCI in Kolkata on Friday. In recent years, Karachi has become the most dreaded venue in international cricket. The worst tag associated with Karachi was when a test match held there in May 2002 was called off two hours before the start after a bomb blast in a hotel. 14 people were killed in that blast. New Zealand then pulled out of the tour of Pakistan and since then Karachi has been a venue that most international teams want to skip. Hall of shame Topics mentioned in this article
