c Ajinkya Rahane b Hanuma Vihari
48.2 OUT! Hanuma Vihari has got rid of the set batsman! Boy, what a move from Virat Kohli. That is what tomorrow's papers will read. But mind you, this has got more to do with the pitch. It is not even Tea on Day 1 but the cracks have already started to open and widen. It is a touch short outside off, Harris looks to cut but suddenly, out of nowhere, the ball bounces off the crack and cramps him for room. He cannot do anything apart from fend and unluckily for him, the ball hits the glove and lobs over Rishabh Pant to Ajinkya Rahane at first slip. Poor Hanuma Vihari is being mobbed by his team mates. They are over the moon in bright afternoon sunshine. Bonus wicket. Excellent knock from Harris though. Seemed to be playing on a different wicket as compared to the rest. 134/3

Aaron Finch | 50 | 105 | 6 | 0 | 47.61 |
lbw b Jasprit Bumrah
35.2 OUT! The first one finally goes. Finch seems to have been trapped plumb in front here. There was conviction in the appeal and yes, the finger goes up too. The ball was fuller and landed just outside off and tails in a bit after landing. Finch completely misses it and gets hit in front of middle. Doesn't go upstairs. Finch goes for 50. Replays show that the ball was going on to hit the middle of middle stump. A good decision not to review, looked plumb to the naked eye as well. Great opening partnership though, has put Australia ahead in the game. 112/1

Usman Khawaja | 5 | 38 | 0 | 0 | 13.15 |
c Rishabh Pant b Umesh Yadav
46 OUT! Caught behind! Khawaja was never looking confident in his stay out there and has been relieved. He stands there in disbelief. Off his 37 strenuous deliveries, he has nicked off on his 38th. A nothing shot, to a short ball outside off. Just flayed hard, did not move his feet and paid the price. A well-deserved wicket for Umesh. He has been inconsistent but this will boost his spirits. 130/2
Shaun Marsh | 45 | 98 | 6 | 0 | 45.91 |
c Ajinkya Rahane b Hanuma Vihari
77 OUT! What a catch by Rahane! He has held on to a really tough one here! Marsh cannot believe his luck. The ball was short outside off and demanded treatmet. Shaun looks to cut hard but only gets an edge that was traveling fast. Rahane at slip stays on his feet and takes the ball with the support of his chest as he somehow holds onto it. He falls backward after taking the catch but ensures the ball is stuck in his hand. India have their fifth against the run of play. Vihari, the 'part-timer' has his second. 232-5 now. 232/5
Peter Handscomb | 7 | 16 | 0 | 0 | 43.75 |
c Virat Kohli b Ishant Sharma
54.1 OUT! Kohli has pulled off a one-handed stunner here! An incredible catch while jumping towards his right and Handscomb has to walk back. Ishant gets his first and India have their fourth. Just what they would've wanted after the Tea break. The ball is one that bounces way more than Handscomb would have expected as he puts his bat loose outside off in an attempt to run this one down to third man. He just gets an outside edge that flies to the right of Kohli at third slip. But lo and behold, the Indian skip just puts his hand out and the ball has stuck. Kind of thing that can lift the fielding team no limits. Australia have slipped from 112-0 to 148-4. 148/4
Travis Head | 58 | 80 | 6 | 0 | 72.5 |
c Mohammed Shami b Ishant Sharma
82.1 OUT! What a waste of a wicket! Head has literally thrown his wicket away. Loose and should be very disappointed. Australia lose their sixth. Ishant has got a wicket off his first ball with the second cherry. A loosener from Sharma to start off with. Well outside off and fuller in length. Head loses his composure as he goes chasing after this wide one and goes for an expansive drive. The ball takes the thick outside edge and carries to Shami who is at third man. Head thumps his pad with his bat as soon as the catch is completed to show his displeasure. And why not. India slowly clawing their way back, will look to finish the day strong. 251/6
Tim Paine Wk | 38 | 89 | 5 | 0 | 42.69 |
lbw b Jasprit Bumrah
105.2 OUT! Paine is on his bike! Two quick wickets for India and their fans in the stands are delighted. Bumrah delivers it from wide of the crease and angles in a length ball on middle. Paine is caught deep inside the crease as he attempts to work it on the leg side. But probably he got beaten for pace as he misses the ball to get rapped on the pads. They appeal and the umpire has no hesitation in raising his finger. Paine takes the review but to no avail. Three reds. He has to go but not before playing a very vital knock for his team. So, Australia now have two new batsmen in the middle who are yet to face a ball. Can India finish things quickly now? 310/8
Pat Cummins | 19 | 66 | 0 | 0 | 28.78 |
b Umesh Yadav
105 OUT! Bowled 'em! The seventh wicket is gone after a 59-run stand and India will be relieved. Umesh has been really good this over and Pat was in two minds because of the length that the bowler has been hitting. This one is just a little fuller and lands on off. The ball seems to be coming in with the angle but straightens in the end and beats the outside edge of Cummins' bat as he looks to defend. It goes on to hit the top of the off pole. Dream delivery for any seamer! This is what was required since the beginning for the visitors. 310/7
Mitchell Starc | 6 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 60 |
c Rishabh Pant b Ishant Sharma
108.2 OUT! The ninth one departs and Ishant has his third of the innings. A good quick 16-run stand comes to an end. This seems to be the ploy to get Starc out. An action replay of his dismissal at Adelaide. Wide outside off and moves away slightly after landing, Starc goes for a wild drive and gets the outside edge. Pant takes a good catch diving to his left. India doing well here after the Drinks break. 326/9

Josh Hazlewood | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Rishabh Pant b Ishant Sharma
108.3 OUT! Ishant gets four and AUSTRALIA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 326. Excellent delivery again, it's angled in from 'round the wicket in the direction of the stumps. Hazlewood has to play at it but to his misfortune, it's an outswinger which kisses the outside edge of his blade. Pant dives across to his left to take a fine catch. Second golden duck for Hazlewood, both have come against India in back-to-back Tests. Sharma will be on a hat-trick next time. 326/10

KL Rahul | 2 | 17 | 0 | 0 | 11.76 |
b Josh Hazlewood
5.1 OUT! Cleaned him all ends up! Rahul plays all around a pretty straight one and gets bowled. The ball was very full, almost yorker length. It seams through the air and Rahul completely misjudges the line of the ball. Plays for the middle and leg line and the ball lands on off and he is cleaned up. Has a look of disbelief on his face as he walks back. Brilliant bowling from the hosts. Both the openers back in the pavilion cheaply. 8/2
Murali Vijay | 12 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Mitchell Starc
3 OUT! Bowled 'em! There's the first one! A huge gap between bat and pad and the timber is disturbed. A Starc special here, as this one lands on middle and tails in after landing. A loose, loose shot from the opener, quite late in bringing his bat down and the ball knocks his middle stump after brushing the back pad on its way through. It is the sixth time Starc has got Vijay in Tests and the third time this series in as many innings. Just the start the hosts would have wanted and exactly not what the Indians would have liked. THAT WILL ALSO BE LUNCH ON DAY 2. 6/1
Cheteshwar Pujara | 24 | 103 | 1 | 0 | 23.30 |
c Tim Paine b Mitchell Starc
38.2 OUT! Starc strikes gold! Pujara has been caught down the leg side. The field was set for some short stuff as Paine had planted a short leg and a leg gully. But the wicket-taking delivery turns out to be a back of a length ball going down the leg side. Pujara tries to glance it off his hips but gets a faint edge behind to Paine. He makes no mistake, they appeal and the finger has gone up. A quick check for the no ball is also done but Mitch is fine with his landing. Australia finally succeed in breaking the 74-run partnership. A big breakthrough too as Pujara is someone who has the ability to bat for a longer period. 82/3
Virat Kohli | 123 | 257 | 13 | 1 | 47.85 |
c Peter Handscomb b Pat Cummins
93 OUT! Massive moment in this match. Virat Kohli is walking off the field with India still trailing by 75 runs. Cummins pitches it up and around off to invite yet another drive from the Indian skipper. Virat obliges as he gets forward to stroke it through covers. But this time his front foot is not exactly to the pitch of the delivery and he ends up edging it behind. Peter Handscomb standing at second slip goes down low to his right and takes the catch inches above the surface. He immediately gets up claiming the catch but Kohli is not going anywhere. The two umpires get together and then refer it upstairs. Soft signal is out. The replays roll in and it's touch and go. One angle shows that Peter's fingers are under the ball. There ain't much conclusive evidence though. The third umpire goes with the soft signal. That brings an end to an outstanding knock by the Indian captain. He heads back amidst a big cheer from the crowd. 251/6
Ajinkya Rahane | 51 | 105 | 6 | 1 | 48.57 |
c Tim Paine b Nathan Lyon
69.4 OUT! Brilliant from Lyon! Even better from Paine! The fourth Indian wicket falls off the fourth ball of the day. Just the start the Aussies would've liked. This one is slightly shorter than the previous one, but Rahane is drawn forward in defense. The ball drifts and straightens a bit with the breeze and gets the faintest of edges. Tim makes no mistake behind the wickets and breaks the stumps as well before beginning his celebration. The finger is up for a caught behind and the Indian vice-captain has to depart without adding any run to his overnight score. This is the 8th time Lyon has hunted down Ajinkya in Tests. Making him his bunny. The deficit for the tourists is still in excess of 150. 173/4
Hanuma Vihari | 20 | 46 | 2 | 0 | 43.47 |
c Tim Paine b Josh Hazlewood
85.3 OUT! What a beautiful delivery from Hazlewood. He has deserved a wicket! Beaten the bat on multiple occasions and finally gets the reward. Serves this one on a length and outside off. Gets the ball to nip off the pitch and it straightens after landing. Vihari, who is on the back foot, tries to defend but gets the slightest of edges. It carries to Paine at a good height. A very good ball that, would get most batsmen out. End of a decent innings, a good 50-run stand with his captain. India still trail by 103 runs. 223/5
Rishabh Pant Wk | 36 | 50 | 2 | 1 | 72 |
c Mitchell Starc b Nathan Lyon
105.1 OUT! Pant has holed out! End of a decent hand but he's dejected. Lyon flights it generously outside off, Pant attempts for a big one down the ground but doesn't connect well. It goes to long on and Mitchell Starc takes a smart catch diving forward. Fourth wicket for the off spinner. Pant had to go for it if the visitors had to reach anywhere near the first innings total of the hosts. Unfortunately for him, it doesn't go the distance. India trail by 47 runs. 279/9
Mohammed Shami | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Tim Paine b Nathan Lyon
93.2 OUT! Just as we thought so. Another one bites the dust. That's the fourth in this session and the match has turned on its head here. Shami gone for a golden duck. Plenty of turn and bounce. It's served outside off by Lyon, Shami comes ahead to defend but gets a feather behind to the keeper. It is collected beautifully by Paine as he jumps in appeal. The finger has gone up. That's too good for a tailender. THAT WILL ALSO BE LUNCH ON DAY 3 AND AUSTRALIA LEAD BY 74 RUNS. 252/7
Ishant Sharma | 1 | 11 | 0 | 0 | 9.09 |
c & b Nathan Lyon
95.2 OUT! Caught and bowled! Third wicket for Lyon. A flighted delivery landing around off and turning back in. Ishant gets forward with the intention to play a firm drive but his bat turns in his hands. He ends up chipping it back to the bowler and Lyon is a superlative fielder off his own bowling. Accepts the catch gleefully with a tumble. A sorry shot by Ishant. All they need is to partner Pant out there. 254/8

c Usman Khawaja b Nathan Lyon
105.5 OUT! Gone next ball. 14th Test fifer for Nathan Lyon, 7th against India. What a bowler! What an extraordinary bowler! Tossed up ball landing outside off, Bumrah gets back inside the crease to defend it with the spin. But it doesn't turn back in enough and takes the outside edge. Khawaja at first slip reacts quickly to his left and grabs a fine catch. All over for India in this innings, they are all out for 283! 283/10

b Jasprit Bumrah
17.2 OUT! Timberrrr... Bumrah provides the first breakthrough. Error in judgment on Harris' part. Once again he did all the hard work but failed to convert his start. It's a good length delivery landing just outside off and then it moves back in a hint with the angle. Marcus watches the line closely and then decides to make a leave. But to his surprise, the ball moves back in just enough to clip the off bail. Bumrah is delighted. Can India build on this breakthrough? The Australian lead is 102 runs. 59/1
Aaron Finch | 25 | 31 | 5 | 0 | 80.64 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
79 OUT! Two in two! The whole Indian team is pumped up now. Excellent from Shami! Welcomes Aaron Finch with a short of a length skidder on middle and leg. Finch looks like he is in two minds here, also a little worried about his finger. He goes for the flick and gets a feather off his glove. It is gleefully accepted by Pant down the leg side. The Indians celebrate and Australia are suddenly 192/6 from 192/4. Mohammed Shami will be on a hat-trick next over. 192/6
Usman Khawaja | 72 | 213 | 5 | 0 | 33.80 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
82.1 OUT! The match may have just turned on its head here! Shami has five wickets in the innings. His fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket and the second in this year. The ball is on a short length and rares up out of nowhere. Khawaja is really taken aback by the ball and gets a glove as he tries to fend it off. Pant collects another easy catch behind the stumps and Khawaja is gone for a good innings of 72. 8 runs and 3 wickets after Lunch. Australia are essentially 241/7 here. 198/7
Shaun Marsh | 5 | 11 | 1 | 0 | 45.45 |
c Rishabh Pant b Mohammed Shami
20.5 OUT! Marsh is gone! The whole Indian team looks pumped up. A short ball on middle, Marsh looks to pull but is too early into the shot. The ball takes the under edge on its way through and Pant takes it comfortably. The umpire signals that the batsman is out and Virat Kohli is super excited. He also gives some kind of a send-off with a few words and actions. Suddenly, the game has come alive. Australia are effectively 107/2. 64/2
Peter Handscomb | 13 | 14 | 3 | 0 | 92.85 |
lbw b Ishant Sharma
25.1 OUT! Trapped in front! An inspirational bowling change by Virat Kohli. He brings his speedster back into the attack and he delivers immediately. This Test match continues to thrill. Poor, very poor by Peter Handscomb. Ishant angles in a full length ball around off, it nips back in just a shade after landing and once again Peter tries to play it out from the comfort of his crease. A stride forward would have helped him there but it's completely absent. Also, his bat comes down at a wrong angle, so basically he has missed a pretty much straight ball to get hit on the pads. They appeal and the finger goes up immediately. The Indians are celebrating the wicket and the crowd is also behind them. What an atmosphere! 85/3
Travis Head | 19 | 49 | 2 | 0 | 38.77 |
c Ishant Sharma b Mohammed Shami
40.1 OUT! Caught at third man! Head falls to the bait, once more! Shami serves this ball wide outside off on the shorter side, Head takes the bait and goes for the slash. The ball rockets off the top edge and goes to Ishant at the boundary, who is stationed especially for that at third man. Sharma moves back a bit and grabs the catch safely. Head will be super disappointed with this shot as he fell in the exact same way in the first innings. That time the bowler was Ishant and the fielder was Shami and now it is vice-versa. India have got a breakthrough at a crucial juncture. Australia are effectively 163-4 now. 120/4
Tim Paine Wk | 37 | 116 | 4 | 0 | 31.89 |
c Virat Kohli b Mohammed Shami
78.5 OUT! What a ripper! An absolute brute of a delivery and the Aussie captain has to go. This is a bouncer and Paine has nothing he can do. It is aimed straight at his head and he tries to fend it off while jumping. The ball comes off his glove and lobs up for a simple catch to Virat Kohli who comes running in to his left from second slip. The Aussie skipper has to leave but Paine has done his job here, one would say. A great start to the session though for India. The Aussies lead by 235 now. 192/5
Pat Cummins | 1 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 16.66 |
b Jasprit Bumrah
83.3 OUT! GONE! This one has kept really low. Can't say what will happen on this surface now. Bumrah bowls a length ball in line of the stumps, instead of rising like the other ones, it keeps low and Cummins is done in by this. No chance of keeping it out as it goes under his bat. The stumps are rattled and that's another wicket down. 198/8
Mitchell Starc | 14 | 29 | 3 | 0 | 48.27 |
b Jasprit Bumrah
93.2 OUT! Bowled 'em! That's it. AUSTRALIA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 243. Bumrah comes back and gets a wicket off the second ball. Starc backs away too far and Bumrah bowls it nice and full on off stump. The left-hander goes for a defensive push on the off side but misses the ball completely. The ball knocks the off stump. Bumrah has his third. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood run off the field to quickly get their pads off before they come back to bowl. INDIA NEED 287 TO WIN. Not going to be easy, but it could have been much worse had it not been for this incredible hour and a half of bowling from them after Lunch. 243/10
Nathan Lyon | 5 | 10 | 1 | 0 | 50 |
c Hanuma Vihari b Mohammed Shami
86.5 OUT! Lyon is dismissed next ball. Shami gets his man, his sixth of the innings. He is all smiles. Back of a length and it's angling in on middle and leg, Nathan Lyon backs away and is cramped for room once more. He looks to cut it over point, does so but hands an easy enough catch to Hanuma Vihari at cover-point who is at the edge of the circle. He comes running in and takes it well. Australia are essentially 250/9 here. 207/9
