Aus series made us tougher: Dhoni

Guwahati:

After the emphatic five-wicket win over Pakistan in the one day series opener in Guwahati on Monday, Indian skipper M S Dhoni said the gruelling engagement against Australia made them tougher and more focussed.

"We came here playing Australia, who are the best in the world. When you come to a series after playing Australia, things do look easier," Dhoni told reporters after India registered a facile five-wicket win over Pakistan at the Jwaharlal Nehru stadium.

India were outplayed in the recent home series by Australia, who coasted to a 4-2 win.

Asked about his 105-run fourth wicket stand with dashing left hander Yuvraj Singh, that set up India's victory, Dhoni said "The key point is we ran very well between the wickets."

Coming together at 113/3, the duo carried India to the threshold of victory in reply to Pakistan's total of 239/7.

Asked whether the success in the series opener would put India in an advantageous position, Dhoni replied "We are taking the series as one match at a time."

Spelling out the recipe for India's success on Monday, the Indian captain said "Our spinners bowled to a plan, our batsmen applied themselves."

On his feelings after getting the man of match award in his maiden ODI match as captain versus Pakistan, Dhoni said "Nothing special. I am part of the team, and if you are part of the team, you have to perform whether you are captain or not."

Dhoni said he came to bat at number four as a left and right combination was needed at that juncture of the innings.

Left-hander Gautam Gambhir was the batsman at the other end.

Dhoni also praised Gambhir, who was preferred in the final eleven ahead of seasoned Virender Sehwag and put up a score of 44 besides stitching together a 82-run second wicket partnership with Sourav Ganguly.
