Chester-le-Street:
World champions Australia won their first match of the NatWest triangular series after beating England by 57 runs. Australia made their intentions clear from the first ball as Adam Gilchrist dug into Chris Tremlett. But Geraint Jones came up with a brilliant catch to send the Australian vice-captain back for 18. Tremlett, who missed out on a hat-trick against Bangladesh on Tuesday, then started to feel the onslaught from the bat of Matthew Hayden. But Hayden was out for 39. No fireworks There weren't any fireworks from captain Ricky Ponting either, though he did manage to go past the 8000-run mark. He was eventually out for 27. Andrew Symonds, back in the squad after his two-match ban for indiscipline, showed just what his team had missed in the defeats to Bangladesh and England. Symonds was ably supported at the other end by Damien Martyn as the two showed that the Australians could not be written off. The pair put on 142 runs in 24 overs with Symonds making 78 before being run out and Martyn scoring 63. Australia ended their 50 overs with a fighting score of 266/5. Disastrous start England's runs chase got off to a disastrous start with Brett Lee shattering Andrew Staruss' stumps in the fifth over. Things then went from bad to worse for the hosts as two wickets in two balls from McGrath left England's innings in tatters at 6/3. Andrew Flintoff and Vikram Solanki then started to put England's innings back together piece by piece. But just as England seemed to have recovered, Ponting took a great catch to remove Solanki for 34. England's man of the series so far, Kevin Pietersen, also failed to take off, falling for 18. Darren Gough played an entertaining innings. He made a career best score of 46, but England fell short by 57 runs.Topics mentioned in this article
