After Monty, Patel turns for England

London:

Another Indian origin player playing for England has shown he is a player to reckon with. Samit Patel hit the headlines, when he made a sensational debut against the South Africans in the Natwest one-day series. He is now looking to take on the Indians in India.

Since his debut at 14, the cricketing fraternity in England has been waiting for Samit Patel to fulfill his early promise. And the 24 year old all rounder did it in style with his 5-wicket haul and an unbeaten 31 at the Oval against the South Africans.

"I had the natural game but it wasn't easy. I didn't realise I'd have to work so hard to make the England team. I had to go to Australia work on my game," said Patel.

Born in Leicester to a middle-class family of Gujarati immigrants, Samit plays for the county side Nottinghamshire. His parents work as newsagents and Samit now stands to be picked for the Stanford Twenty20 match where each player who is in the winning team will get a million dollars each. But he's hoping to get picked for the team that tours India.

"Watching India when I was young and now playing for England is a dream come true. Hopefully, we don't play in Gujarat. Am sure support will be there for an Indian in the opposition," Samit hoped.

With players like Monty Panesar already having consolidated their position, another immigrant is scripting his success story.
