Afridi denies slapping of spectator

Karachi:

Pakistan's flamboyant all-rounder, Shahid Afridi was involved in an unpleasant incident with a spectator during a match of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the United bank complex on Friday.

Although a television channel flashed the news that Afridi had slapped a spectator without showing any footage, the all-rounder denied he had slapped anyone.

"No I didn't slap anyone. These reports are not true. I have never misbehaved with spectators or my fans in the past everyone knows that," Afridi said.

Afridi explained that after the day's play was over he was going to the mosque to say his prayers but there was a big rush of spectators outside the boundary ropes and near the dressing rooms.

"There was this chap who kept on persisting that I give him an autograph and I told him I am going for my prayers and I can also give the autograph tomorrow. But he kept on annoying me and I tried to push him away and my hand touched him but I didn't slap him," Afridi said.

The channel showed footage of an upset Afridi going into the dressing room as spectators gathered around him but there was no footage of any slapping.

The Quaid-e-Azam trophy tournament is being played at different centres of the country with the third round getting underway today.

Most of the leading Pakistani players are taking part in the competition with captain Shoaib Malik and fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar also making their appearances today for their departmental teams.

Younis Khan, the captain of Habib bank for whom Afridi plays, said there was a need to control the presence of spectators and fans near the dressing room.
