Turin:

Indian men will endeavour to continue on their comeback trail when they take on a strong German team in the sixth round of the 37th Chess Olympiad here. Despite a bad start when they lost 1-3 to Morocco in the opening encounter, not much is yet lost for the Indian men. But now onwards, they will have to fire on all cylinders to retain medal hopes in the biggest biennial chess event. The second seeded Indian team will have a tall task at hand in the remaining eight rounds as they have not yet played any team seeded in the top ten. As the matches progress, they are going to meet tougher opposition. In a 13-round Swiss format, the Olympiad gives chances to recover right till the end of the event as even a last round 4-0 result can propel the team several notches up. After the first five rounds, top seed Russia and third seed Armenia have clearly dominated the proceedings and have 15.5 points each followed by Holland on 15 points. India men with 13.5 points in their kitty stand joint 12th currently and need a few good victories to begin knocking on the medal door. For Russia, the return of Vladimir Kramnik to competitive chess after a six-month gap has made the difference to the team, especially because he was instrumental in helping it beat Germany and slavaging a draw against Armenia with excellent victories on the top board.
