Powered by Viswanathan Anand and in-form Surya Shekhar Ganguly, the Indian men humbled Holland 3-1 in the sixth round of the 36th Chess Olympiad at Fran Casino. Ukraine stretched its lead to a full point following another victory in the biggest chess event grounding talented Azerbaijanis by a minimal margin of 2.5-1.5 points. However, it was top seed and defending champion Russia that caught everyone's fancy in the day as Peter Svidler took charge of the second board and guided his team to a very impressive 3.5-0.5 triumph over Israel. Svidler, who is highly regarded the world over, was not present in Mallorca for the first few rounds and his arrival yesterday gave Russia, winner of the last six Olympiads, the momentum it was lacking so far. After their fantastic victory over 8th seed Holland, the Indian men moved to joint third spot in the standing list along with Bulgaria on 17 points. Israel, Spain 'A', Armenia and Azerbaijan are in joint fifth place on 16.5 while Slovakia, Georgia, France, Poland and Cuba are clubbed together, tallying an identical 15.5 points apiece. Significantly, India is the only team in the Olympiad so far that has won all its matches. Even Ukraine has conceded one draw to Israel while the Russians were tamed by the leaders in the fourth round itself. (PTI)
