Indian eves suffered a 0.5-2.5 defeat at the hands of top placed Ukraine in the 12th and penultimate round of the Women's Chess Olympiad. The result left the Indians with 22 points in this section with just one round remaining. Koneru Humpy went down against in-form Natalia Zhukova on the top board. D Harika too could not match the talent of Kateryna Lahno in the second match. Swati Ghate came up with a draw on the third board against Anna Ushenina to avoid a whitewash. The Ukrainian women almost made sure of the gold medal with another fine performance. With 28 points in their bag now, Ukraine has a huge two point lead over Russia that drew its penultimate round game with France. The Ukrainians now need just a draw in the final round to ensure first place, while the fight for the silver medal is between Russia and China.
